I’ve been struggling for the past couple of days to start a blog about my experiences in Bangladesh – not because there is nothing to write, but because I couldn’t imagine how I would pick one story. So I’m throwing focus out the window because in fact, it is the breadth and ambition of BRAC’s work that is breathtaking and changing millions of lives. BRAC is the world’s largest NGO, founded in Bangladesh, and with 60,000 employees there alone (they are increasingly working internationally too). Their ambition is no less than to alleviate poverty in their country, and to empower all Bangladeshi citizens to build a better, more prosperous future together.

Needless to say, this mission cannot be served with one type of programme, or a single client group. BRAC’s major insight is that for all Bangladeshi citizens – especially the poorest – to pull themselves out of economic, social and political poverty, the support they are offered must address all elements of the personal context and collective history that are holding them back.

So I have met women in an urban slum who are being supported to build small businesses and improve their lives. They receive microfinance loans to kick start enterprises selling saris, cakes, fish and tea. But that is not enough to sustain a better life. BRAC also offers them training to manage their money and their accounts, to sign their own name and to get an identity card to protect their assets. They learn about basic health and hygiene so they can keep their businesses running, and their children safe.

Saira grew up in a rural village and moved to the city when she could no longer generate any income to support her family. On moving to the city, she struggled to find work and ended up brick-breaking like many others – hard, unreliable, physical work. She and her children had no more than one meal a day. Following support and a small loan from BRAC, she now runs a cake business that makes enough money to send her youngest daughters to school and to feed the whole family three times a day. Perhaps most importantly, BRAC has helped her to learn about her rights. This has had a major impact. Saira’s husband abandoned her eight years ago, with six daughters to support. When he heard about her flourishing business, he tried to come back to share in her success. And she would not take him back – unheard of in traditional communities.

I have also met young children at a BRAC primary school, desperate to show me the interactive games they use to learn Bengali, English and other subjects. They clamoured to tell me of their ambitions to be doctors, teachers, engineers and even a pilot – despite being too poor even to afford to go to a government school. They too learn a broader, rights-based curriculum that imbues them with far greater control over their own lives, and belief that they can achieve anything. The same is true of the teenagers in an ‘adolescents’ group’ just outside Dhaka, the women in a ‘social capital’ group in a rural village, and the volunteer teachers even further off the beaten track.

BRAC is not an education organization. It is not a micro finance organization and it is not a training organization even though it does all those things. It is a citizen-building organization. It is helping to build a new set of values, skills, aspirations and determination in millions of people by providing them with a platform to do more and better for themselves. I haven’t even mentioned one hundredth of what they do. But Saira’s final reflection on the impact of working with BRAC sums up what I heard over and over again. ‘Now, I am tension free’.

Yes please to all or any of you who are leading the mediation of headlines and actions in microbanking and microhealthcare should come: dare I say the founder of The Economist James Wilson was some sort of the Scottish blend of Muhammad Yunus. and Sir Fazle Abed

Prior to the 1700ish banking scam in which Scotland lost its independence to London, Scotland invested more in children, education , community critical services like health than any country in Europe. This investment was literally raped by London, and capital punishment was an excuse to chop off the heads of illiterate youth who were not prepared to act as serfs.

 

James had 2 knowhows to test market  – that of adam smith’s principles at Glasgow University and that of the extreme social action of entrepreneurship in France. Entrepreneur (between take) refers to having cut off heads of royalty who were monoplosing ;productive assets will we build liberte, egalite, fraterite – a health society that generates strong economy. Adam Smith developed economic constructs to try to prevent future recurrence of a small nation that had spent most in investing in youth and family and community being victim to a hostile takeover by a larger nation who gad used an international banking scam . The people of scotland lost half of all their money in such a scam around 1700; of closure Adam would have celebrated grameen as the perfect free market of banking immune to such scams. People forget that prior to the industrial revolution, most people never moved more than 12 miles in their whole lives. So one grameen branch would have been the perfect regional size to offer all your sustainable financial services with its 60 by 60 micromarket village centres where people sat in circles to share knowledge on job creation

 

Between 1700 and 18560, scotland’s job creation circles were typically hosted by ministers of the scottish free church- my double great granddad was one on isle of arran at the same time that James took his parallel social action initiatives in London. Every Sabbath on isle of of arran people went to 2 churches. One of upper class religion  hosted by the man who owned 90% of Arran’s land and his administrators, who since London’ rule were told sheep make more profit each quarter than people. The Economist desperately wanted when my dad was sill young to appoint Roy Jenkins as editor. So the 2010s is the most exciting decade to be alive; and probably the journal of social business’s first paper should be based on the last chapter of building social business and include the Dhaka-paris-glasgow axis. However we don’t just need microeconomics but to map how it empowers the collaboration entrepreneur. Whichever are youths 20 top sustainability goals fro 2020 they will only happen with an open source replication of micro solutions the like of which we are on the verge of co-creating if 2010s becomes humanity’s most exciting decade.

 

But lets remember James Wilson stories on Nov 2 if we can because they are the bridge to the conscience of chairman of economist and pearsons,, and broadcasters like Andrew Neil and rational optimism of science editing by the next viscount of Blagdon and the pride that the son of forma liberal leader Jo Grimmond and of Baroness Hogg daughter of the former Lord Chance;lor (a story of which dad ended his oxford union defeat of michael foot by a margin of 99% to 1% www.oxbridge.tv . 1 is where all village womens development of poorest nations begins- its not only searches out best value (eg oral rehydration) but it needs local educational distribution because expensive nurses dont want to live in villages without electricity anyhow; additionally the first 1000 days of infant nutrition are critical not just to physical but to brand development - so several goals - end poverty, end hungers, qua;ity local health need the exact  (Deadaid)opposite of academia's expert silos.; in strong communities mothers organise swaps of eg daycare (ie taking monetary transactions out is pivotal ); when bangladesh was faced with huge adult literacy challenges what do you think was more motivating to mothers than literacy which also helped them save their babies lives; and what do you think turned round male chauvinistic cultures to valuing women who as mothers saved their childrens lives (one out of 5 infants died in bangladesh of 1970s until knowhow of oral rehydration was socially networked through every village mother)l bangladesh villages were able to experiment with such radical bottom-up development and jobs networks because at birth of the nation the government was so poor that even offering gov services in the city was beyond it- the villages with no electricity, no telecoms, no running water, no roads --- peoples , especially mothers, were left to innovating bottom up and replicable franchises.  This structure and family of templates emerged as the greatest ever pre-digital societal networks  -it also  became a fast forward foundation for labs when mobile partnerships first came to the villages

UNICEF was wonderful when james grant used to carry a sachet or oral rehydration salts in his pocket and bring it out before national leaders broke bread at fancy dinner parties. It was around the James Grant School of Global Public Health that BRAC started up the first (and still the most collaborative) Global Poverty University.From the outset BRAC spirited a curious attitude to international aid fuding. Iy used funds to exper5emnt small and publish failures before it worked out successes. What can be more valuable to design  open learning around than that.?Why deploy inter-governmental trickle down and conditional aid when you can whoosh-up aid with little sister empowerment

2 the arguments for prioriting this type of helth care are varied- in a connected world rich and poor may be wiped out by the same plague anyhiow; but mostly this type of health care innovation needs to be taken back from big pharma:

start with the UN taking back the patents from any pharma that sits on an orphan drug- eg vaccination to prevent cholera not marketed because it doesnt make high enough profit in accountants books

take back all work on vaccinations from big pharma- obviously their profit models dont fit ending a disease

on something like MDR tuberculosis end society paying double - to eg NIH to do basic research and to pharma to commercialise the new drug often a minor extension of previous knowhow dressed up at 10000 dollars per treatment -no wonder MDR Tubeculosis isnt going away

in all of the above note that infectious diseases are prevented at source by last mile education and often best adminiistered by patients who are immune having survived the disease- 

intriguingly partners in heatth www.pih.org  was primarily built as a university youth community exchange on caring for infectious disease placing boston's finest medical students in haiti's poorest labs, and then in all hemispheres poorest labs, and then  funding regional teaching hospitals

3 one way to bring down the post of chronic is to prevent it in the first place (eg obesity) and to challenge the sick advertising culture that addicts youth and makes it normal for many adults to feel they need to be on drugs; interestingly the world's leading intervention of economical chronic sort is coming from another under 30 youth movement out of boston - having mastered what sustainable infectious diesease service is, they wanted to linkin their generation to minimising cost of chronics

4 maries conscious healthcare may provide some clues to hospice- so does taking lawyers out of hospice. in many parts of the usa 20% of nurses are retiring in next 7 years; many would like part-time elderly care work but to offer this the,selves they needed a prohibitively expensive professional insurance plan- back khan academy in universalising nursing skills dashboard as second only to open learning of maths; and if you dare: ask why the whole national education budget doesnt devote 5% to global youth ,movements peer to peer sustainability goals solution networking

5 to 7 may be harder to solve

even if you find something to disagree with in the above, the OPEN SPACE  (ie hackathon)exercises of segmenting healtn services and asking is the combination of public servants and educators incentivised to help all young/inter-generational citizens linkin to affordable accessible healthcare should not be a party political one- it is one that global (under 30) youth communities need to be empowered to network through a mixture of mobile smarts and local love. In the hackathon on redesigning ebola space suits. the first ever china abd usaid innovation team was formed. May be that be millennials  future of basic education and health without borders

Doswell, Ph.D., President/CEO, Juxtopia, LLC, Director of the IEEE Virtual Instructor Pilot Research Group (VIPRG), Bowie State University Department of Computer Science External Advisory Committee. Abstract: Mixed Reality is a term coined by Milgram that refers to the merging of real and virtual worlds to produce new environments and visualizations where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact, in real time. Mixed reality includes the following categories of reality: Augmented Reality (AR), augmented virtuality, virtual reality, the real-world. In 1990, Boeing researcher Tom Caudell first coined the term “augmented reality” to describe a digital display used by aircraft electricians that blend virtual graphics onto a physical reality with an objective to superimpose digital data over a real-world environment in in real-time. This early innovation provided a “dream” to aircraft mechanics reducing the need to ask or try to translate what they found described in abstract diagrams located in manuals. Dr. Doswell, built upon the pioneering research of Caudell and contributed over ten years of wearable AR research to the Juxtopia Group, an open source mixed reality head mounted display (HMD) platform. The Juxtopia® Context-Aware Mobile Mixed Reality Assistive Device (CAMMRAD) platform is continually advancing to improve human cognitive performance. In his talk, Dr. Doswell will survey past and current wearable ARHMDs (such as Google Glass); Forecast the future of wearable AR systems; and Describe student and faculty research opportunities to further advance wearable AR systems to improve human cognition. Detailed Workshop for Virtual Reality Lab Students: The detailed workshop will explain what is a microcontroller and how to program it a for wearable AR platform. How to program an app for wearable AR device such as Google Glass. The talk will also explain what are AR hardware subsystems and what are the strengths and weaknesses of several wearable AR hardware. Dr. Doswell will train undergraduate and graduate participants how to use the open source, Juxtopia® CAMMRAD, to develop commercial level AR hardware and software that may interface with various AR Goggle systems and facilitate technology transfer for BSU students and faculty. The global telemedicine market grew from $9.8 billion in 2010 to $11.6 billion in 2011 and will almost triple to $27.3 billion in 2016, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.6% over the next five years, according to a report from BCC Research. Juxtopia® Imhotep officially entered the Qualcomm Tricorder X PRIZE http://www.qualcommtricorderxprize.org/ in January, 2014.
